Why Do We Suffer? Psychological Isolation, the Ego, and the Mystery of the Cross

To understand why human beings suffer, we must first examine the rare moments when we do not suffer. A child naturally integrated with family, playmates, and school is filled with spontaneous joy. A person who communicates with warmth and understanding in their marriage and workplace experiences harmony.

Suffering invariably begins the moment psychological isolation takes root.

Psychological Isolation and the Tyranny of Thought

Isolation is the direct offspring of mechanical, egocentric thought. The intellect continuously erects fences that divide us from others:

  • “I am smarter than they are.”
  • “My social group is superior.”
  • “I deserve more prestige and validation.”

These divisive thoughts fabricate an artificial self-image (the ego of self-importance). Because this self-image is built on pride and desire, it is extraordinarily fragile. The moment someone disagrees with our opinions, ignores our desires, or wounds our pride, acute psychological suffering is born.

The Esoteric Mystery of the Cross: Integration vs. Isolation

In universal symbolism, the Cross is the sacred emblem of conscious integration:

  • The Horizontal Beam: Represents everyday physical events, relationships, and external challenges.
  • The Vertical Beam: Represents conscious presence, meditation, and direct connection with the divine Spirit.

Where these two lines intersect at a right angle is the Present Moment. When we encounter life without egoic judgments and without the pride that separates, we construct an inner Cross of harmonious integration. A parent anchored in this state educates with profound patience and love; a partner listens without defensiveness.

Carrying the Inner Cross

Jesus the Christ, working symbolically as a carpenter, demonstrated the sacred art of constructing and carrying one’s own cross. In esoteric terms, carrying the cross signifies fulfilling our sacred commitments to conscience and spiritual awakening:

  1. Transforming Daily Friction: Facing difficulties with love and serenity instead of mechanical anger.
  2. Integrating the Psyche: Uniting the fragmented parts of our consciousness through self-observation and prayer.
  3. Reconciling with Others: Seeking to understand the perspectives of our fellow human beings rather than demanding they conform to our desires.

The Transmutation of Suffering into Wisdom

Suffering is not an inescapable curse; it is the friction caused by the resistance of our ego against the flow of life. When we learn to observe ourselves d’instant en instant, dissolve our false self-image, and lovingly carry our cross, suffering is transmuted into radiant spiritual wisdom, conscious peace, and inner resurrection.
